Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii. The significance of Pompeii cannot be overstated. The town provides a living example of how Romans lived. It showed that both the rich and the poor lived in the same areas; wealth was not a dividing factor. Additionally, it showed how slaves could be freed and ended up becoming extremely wealthy, as seen through the skeletal remains of the “green man” in the documentary “Pompeii, Back from the Dead” . Also, Pliny’s letters offer historians a detailed account of what happened that day and it gives proof through documentation that the city of Pompeii was real, and that it wasn’t made up. The account gives details of how massive the eruption was; Pliny himself was not on Pompeii at the time of the eruption, however, he could clearly see Vesuvius erupt. Overall, the story of Pompeii adds more details surrounding how Roman citizens lived, how lavish the games were, and how religious the citizens
