Adrenaline.
Everyone feels it whether they want to or not. It can be felt before a nerve wracking performance, at the top of the big drop on a rollercoaster, or even while watching a suspenseful or scary movie. Stephen King’s essay “Why We Crave Horror Movies” describes the sheer craving we have to experience terror and release our everyday emotions. He provides multiple examples explaining why people watch horror movies; ranging from simply wanting to show that we’re not afraid, to truly enjoying the sight of watching people being tortured and killed. Many people disagree with King’s ideas because of how mind boggling the concept of desiring fear is, but that is just because they don’t understand how cruel our human nature can be.

The ones that are twisted and cruel but yet people still laugh. Why? Because it clearly humors them. Even though the little voice in the back of someone’s head tells them it’s wrong, they still have the other voice that taunts them and laughs at how wicked the joke is. They like jumping at sudden noises and covering their eyes when the suspenseful music grows louder and louder. If people do not have fun while being scared or don’t like things that are scary, then why do so many people celebrate Halloween? Every October 31st, millions of people put in their fangs and go out to have fun. Halloween gives people a day where it’s “okay” to be scary and enjoy gory things. The same is true for horror films. Even if the “potential lyncher is in almost all of us”, everyone is forced by society to set those emotions aside (7). This doesn’t actually mean that everyone is a mad serial killer. It just means that people have a side of them that enjoys frightening things and seeing a horror movie or celebrating Halloween aids in letting those emotions
