Eugene Froelich Sara Gillis ENGL 101T 23 Oct. 2016 Cellular Phones in Schools In today’s world technology is everywhere from cars, home, and schools. Cellular phones are one item everyone seems to have, and children are getting them at younger and younger ages. (LaCasse n.p.). Cell phone use in schools can be a highly debated subject. On the one hand, in the article “Smartphones Go to School,” they can be looked at as a great learning tool(Wells D.1). On the contrary, in the article “Could Smartphone Bans Help Students Achieve More?” they can also act as a distraction in the school setting (LaCasse n.p.). Writer Charle Wells is a published writer of the Wall Street Journal (Wells D.1), Alexander LaCasse is a Staff Writer for the Christian Science Monitor (LaCasse n.p.). Both authors present their points in two separate ways to persuade the reader as to if cell phones work in the school setting or not. In LaCasse’s article, one of the things he does is use a study from the London School of Economic the shows test scores did on prove when students did not have their phones (LaCasse n.p.). In that same study, the researchers point their fingers at students saying they do not have the self-control to have phones in school (Lacasse n.p.). LaCasse used information from the Beckman Center report that states “All told, the technology at students’ disposal might be serving as more of a distraction than a learning tool” (LaCasse n.p.). This information uses the word “might” which does not give a definitive answer. LaCasse also goes into studies on how early students are getting cell phones.
