American Poet Maxine Kumis once wrote in the women’s review of books that Mary Oliver is the indefatigable guide to the natural world. What did Oliver observe that could inspire her to write the poem Wild Geese? Any reader of this poem will find it full of meaning. Nature has always spoken to humanity for generation. Oliver is talking directly to her reader imploring them to not worry so much about being good, rather, the reader should be true to nature and the beauty found in it. Throughout the poem Oliver use the word “you “to speak to the reader, which lead an intimate almost urgent about the work. The simplicity of the poem is that the speaker is talking directly to the reader about concentrating and to observe nature, and not the things that we carry through life that seem so important. Oliver hinted from the poem (1) you do not have to be good. (2) You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles, through the desert repenting. Oliver point out to the reader they should not be concern about being good, and always repenting and looking to be punish. The speaker also remind the reader regardless what may happen in life the world will keep turning, and nature will continue as it was. Oliver quote in line (6) she begins a two way conversation with her reader. She implores “Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mines. Oliver is telling us not that she don’t understand, but she has travel the same road in life. I think the greatest testimony is life experience, and without it you cannot help anyone unless you been there. Oliver diction of using words are compassion and very good. She is the guide for nature, but to go on this journey, you must unload excess baggage, and if not you cannot bring back what been
