Why is it, that without a governing body, humans can be such terrible creatures? Why is it that they will only care for their well being? In Lord of The Flies, William Golding shows how humans will act without government through the characters of Ralph, Simon, Jack. Along with the symbolic meaning of the conch. The characters are three young british boys whose plane has crashed on an island. The boys are stranded and have no adults. In the novel, the antagonist is Jack. He is the oldest of the boys and displays the dark side of human nature. The first decision the buys make when they get onto the island is who shall be elected chief. Jack expects everyone will vote for him, as he jumps to say “Me! Me!” when the decision is to be made, but everyone votes for Ralph. This decision is the start of chaos that will soon overwhelm the island they live on. Ralph is voted chief and given the task to lead the other boys and get everyone rescued. Ralph completed his tasks in certain ways and did not in others. He got the boys rescued by having them smoke him out to find and kill him but failed to keep the boys together as a group. This is because of the conflict between Ralph and Jack. “You let the fire go out.” This repetition makes Jack uneasy. “We need to have them in the hunt,” he said, “or there wouldn’t have been enough for the ring.” He flushed, conscience of a fault. “The fires only been out for an hour or two, we can light it-.” After this event the boys left Ralph after Jack made his own gang. Ralph did everything in the best interest of the group, but the boys were to blind and ignorant to see it, which lead to the conflict everyone went through.
