Woodrow Wilsons’ main objective was for World War 1 to be the “war to end all wars”, promoting peace, security, and unity throughout the international system, and overall creating a League of Nations. As Calvin Coolidge became president his main objective was to work towards the betterment of the economy in the United States. He did this by keeping the government relatively based on business. “Coolidge wanted business to run the country; he wanted fewer government regulations, higher tariffs, lower taxes, and a reduced federal debt. He favored business not because he hated labor, but because he thought the president should reflect the popular will, and the people wanted business to operate largely unfettered” (Hamilton). He was elected president in 1932 because it was believed that Roosevelt, rather than his opponent Herbert Hoover, would be able to combat the crippling economic Depression that the country was entangled in more efficiently. Every four years, the United States elects a new president, someone who will lead the country for the next four years. This person has the responsibility to lead the country and people through the next four years as best as he or she can. When they leave office, many of these people leave the United States in a better place than it was at the beginning of their four years.
