One of the two books being compared in this essay is titled “Defiance” by Alvin Townley and was written in 2014. The other novel that was chosen for this essay was written in 1971 and is titled “Five Years to Freedom” it was written by James N. Rowe. These two books were focused on the capture and the treatment of American Prisoners of War during the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War started in 1954 and ended on April 30, 1975 totaling over twenty years. Each book has its idea of the incidents that happened and in “Defiance” there are several stories of a gang eleven American soldiers that was known famously as the Alcatraz Eleven. In the book “Long Way Down” by Jason Reynolds, Shawn has a big impact on Will, the protagonist, despite only appearing in the book a few times. Shawn’s death sets off a chain of events which lead Will to question his life and his values, and ultimately leads him to make a life-altering decision. Firstly, Shawn’s death sets the story’s plot in motion, leading to Will’s decision to seek revenge. Will’s belief in the “code” of his community, which states that he must seek retribution for his brother’s murder, is deeply ingrained in him, and he feels obligated to follow it.
1. No crying 2. No snitching and 3. The most important of them all… Seek revenge. So Will followed the rules.
The other two, no snitching and revenge, Shawn eventually taught him later on. Will did the best he could to follow these rules. Growing up he saw everyone following these rules and viewed them as normal. Although he was never put in the place where he had to follow rule number three, revenge.
In, "A Good Man Down, Lee Jenkins vividly tells this event as if you were write there witnessing this happen to the town. Going into depth about who Ed Thomas, Mark Becker, and Bob Smeins helped form the people and show us the type of person they were from the very beginning through the tone that shaped this article. Jenkins goes in depth about how Thomas was more than just an ordinary High School football coach and that he meant something to each and every person in the town and the sentence, "He was the rock that this community was built on," shows this (Jenkins). Many times in life, we have to make decisions that are influenced by people in our lives. We feel pressured to listen to them, when sometimes they aren’t always right. A topic that shows this a lot is loyalty vs morality. Sometimes, people want to defend someone just because they know them. If they have been with us for a long time, people get very defensive, because oftentimes, one must pick what they want to do.
3 states. Will believes in the rules so greatly that it causes him to create a plan to kill Riggs since he is so enraged and has lots of grief that he is experiencing. That’s why Will is stubborn and follows the rules, even though there are consequences. Will conveys how and why he believes in following rule no. 3 and all of the rules are vital since his brother Shawn died. Will is not going to continue his cycle of violence because his brother Shawn wants Will to follow a new path that does not follow the rules and is not filled with violence.
With a title like Rules for Radicals: A Practical Primer for Realistic Radicals and a reputation of controversial teachings, it can be difficult to read the works of Saul Alinsky with an open mind. Having read the entire book before, I will say that there are some valid points within his writing, but the term “Community organizing” might not an accurate description of how aggressive and warlike some of the tactics are. Though Alinsky is often associated with socialism or leftist views, he always refused to categorize himself politically. Rules for Radicals is Alinsky’s guide to conquer any argument, regardless of political or social standing.

Defying What Is Right To Do What Is Necessary Someone who follows all the rules and takes the path of the average citizen must be more intelligent and well rounded as a person than someone who doesn’t, right? Well in the case of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the main character, Guy Montag realizes the importance of books in a society in which they have been outlawed but the government. Individuals who continuously follow the path of their own society do not always have a higher morals than the people that choose to defy common practice based on what they believe is correct.
