While women make up half of today’s workforce, they make seventy-nine cents to every dollar a man makes ("Pay Equity & Discrimination." — IWPR. N.p., n.d. Web. 14 Sept. 2016.). To put it in perspective, for every $60,000 a man makes, a women only makes $47,400. The Equal Pay Act of of 1963 prohibited companies from determining pay based on the gender of the worker.

Gender Wage Gap Rough Draft Although it has been improved, the wage gap between genders is still an issue. On average, women only earn about 79 cents of a man’s dollar (“New Report Examines… ”). While some believe that the gender wage gap is not an issue, women are still making less and hold fewer senior positions than men, thus it is important to raise awareness about this gap and pass legislation to ensure income equality.
The gender wage gap can be explained by the statistic; the female-to-male wage ratio of 2010 was 77% (Ferris & Stein, 2014 pg 255). This means that in 2010, the average female made 23% less in yearly earnings compared to men. Ethnicity can also be included to explain the wage gap. This can be explained by the statistic; Asian males make the most money compared to all other racial groups (Median, 2012). The symbolic interactionism view on gender can be explained as “Gender is learned through the process of socialization; gender inequalities are reproduced through interactions with family, peers, schools, and the media” (Ferris & Stein, 2014 pg 247).
The gender pay gap is a significant issue in the United States because it promotes institutional and internal sexism and the unfair treatment of human beings. An infamous statistic about the wage gap has been the 77 cent statistic, stating that for every dollar a man earns, a woman earns 77 cents. The statistic is calculated by, “...dividing the median earnings of full-time, year-round, working women by the median earnings of full-time, year-round, working men, all rounded to the nearest $100” (Glynn 2). This, however, represents males and females from all occupations, causing opponents to argue that, because it does not represent the gap between people who have the same job, a wage gap does not exist. Nonetheless, multiple studies have proven that a gender pay gap does exist within the United States.
The gender wage gap is outrageous. That gap is still significantly large in America, despite efforts that have been going on for decades to eliminate it. Women simply receive substantially less than men in this country. They are being discriminated against, and there is so much evidence to prove this. We cannot let them dismiss the evidence any longer.
With women only earning seventy-seven cent for each dollar their male counterparts make, it is no doubt that the gender wage gap in the United States is an issue. Despite the attempts to close this gap, women are still only earning less than eighty percent of what males are for performing nearly the same tasks. While the gap has gotten smaller, it has not fully closed and many questions have been brought forth about this economic inequality. With closer examination, it can be found that women earn less than men for many factors besides their gender, that there are many possible methods of further closing the gap, but however, it is not likely that this issue will become one of the past any time soon.
