Before the 1920’s, most women did not have any legal rights. They were only seen as homemakers or property of men. When they are born, women belonged to their fathers, brothers, or any other male family member. Considering remaining single was a taboo, women were usually sold to men to become her husband. After they were married, all a woman’s rights and inheritance belonged to her husband. Women were supposed to submit to their husbands. Since running away from their husband was seen as a crime, any woman captured could be punished by law. A woman’s only purposes was to bare children, and take care of the family.
