Women in To Kill a Mockingbird What role do women play in To Kill a Mockingbird? Harper Lee shows how women’s roles in the novel are very important. The author portrays women as a positive role in this novel. There are three women in the novel that play a positive role. They are Calpurnia, Aunt Alexandra and Miss Maudie. Calpurnia plays the role of a kind African American women always willing to help. For example one day it started to snow and Jem, Scout and Atticus were freezing Scout stated that, “Calpurnia kept every fire place in the house blazing,” (Lee 91). This shows that Calpurnia would make sure that everyone in the house is was good. This also shows that Calpurnia cared about Scout, Jem and Atticus. Another example is when Atticus found out that Tom Robinson was dead he told Calpurnia, “’Cal, I want you to come out with me to and help tell Helen, ‘” (Lee 315). This shows that Calpurnia wouldn’t mind helping Atticus. This also shows that Atticus was able to trust Calpurnia with helping him. For example one day Scout and Jem were walking to their house when they see the aunt sitting on the porch. Alexandra tells Scout, “’ we decided that it would be best for you to have some feminine influence, ‘” (Lee 170). This shows that Aunt Alexandra was going to show Scout how a young lady should act. This also shows that Alexandra doesn’t think Scout has had much of a women role in her life. Another example is when Alexandra had her missionary circle over and Scout was dressed formal,” I was wearing my pink Sunday dress, shoes, and a petticoat,” (Lee306). This shows that Aunt Alexandra is making Scout dress nice. This also shows that Alexandra is showing her how to dress for nice occasions. Aunt Alexandra had a good impact on Scouts
