The purpose of a bulletin board is to portray new information to students in a fun and interactive way. Their primary purpose is to function to integrate instruction and help students see connections that exist. A bulletin board is used in the classroom in various ways, the depth and complexity can be changed to focus students’ study on the core of the content. In this case, an interactive bulletin board can function as an instructional tool or act as a “secondary” teacher in the classroom because it facilitates intellectual engagement without direct instruction. As I created my bulletin board on Germany, I kept all these aspects in mind.
A Germany bulletin board would be used in the context of a unit focused on countries around the world. Similar to what we are currently doing in EDU 324, teaching social studies, we are changing the bulletin board about every other week to a different country. The board is aimed for sixth to seventh grade students. It works the same as the popular game Scrabble; however, the suggested words list contains German words. I have a bag of scrabble letters for the students to pick from to add their words onto the game board; next to the baggy is tape to stick them on. Creating another detail, I hid the translation of the word under a small piece of paper to give the student an opportunity to guess what the word means. Finally, I included facts and pictures about Germany to describe its culture and customs. For example, Oktoberfest is a celebration in Munich, its carnival culture celebrates the marriage of Prince Ludwig, which the citizens were invited to attend festivities. Also included, the day of German Unity or the National Day of Germany, celebrated on October 3 as a public holiday to commemorate the anniversary of German reunification in
