My Experience As A Teaching Assistant Program In Germany

German has been part of my life for seven years and I look to it being part of my future as well, since I am wanting to teach it at the high school level and to continue to work on my own German. With this year in Germany as part of the ETA program, I will not only get the chance to work and learn from with fellow teachers, but also improve my German and build up my knowledge of German life, so I can better teach my students when I am back in the United States. My personal experience in Germany was only five months so having a more extended time in another place would give me the chance to expand my knowledge outside of Saarbrucken where I studied. I will be bringing a year of experience teaching in a classroom and an education degree of History Secondary Education and German. With that degree I would come into the classroom with a variety of different teaching methods and ways to reach students. A lot of my classes have also focused on moving away from tradional lecture methods, so I will bring new techniques to help students with their English and United States understanding. I studied abroad in Saarbrucken, Germany for five months in 2016 and it was my first real personal exposure to Germany. I was very lucky with that experience and it took a while in my German learning journey to get there and it is not something that all German learners have, so being able to bring in more varied authentic German experiences into my classroom can help to supplement my students’ understanding of Germany until they get a chance to go experience it themselves.
