I am applying to your master’s program in biomedical communications for the Fall 2018 semester. I have been interested in becoming a medical illustrator since I was in the seventh grade and the fact that the biomedical communications program is only one out of four medical illustration programs in North America renders it very appealing. Throughout the entirety of my life, I have been fascinated with the sciences and the visual arts. As a child, I filled sketchbooks with portraits of family members and copies of anatomy drawings from anatomy textbooks. I vividly recall my fifth-grade teacher being astounded by my knowledge of anatomy as I had labelled more than required organs on a sheet of anatomy homework. My tenacity and ability in the visual arts drew attention to the art department chair. Attaining this position allowed me to become more adept at explaining and communicating concepts and ideas using visual means. I also established my ability to multi-task and balance academics, being a research assistant and the vice president of one of the largest student organizations, as well as other extracurricular activities. One of these activities was being hired by a graphic design company to make illustrations of birds for bird food packages. Once again, I was enabled to demonstrate my ability to combine visual representation with science and technology. I had to collaborate with the graphic design company in order to design anatomically correct bird illustrations in adobe photoshop in a specific style requested by the client.
