REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE The healthcare system plays a vital role in society because it provides an organized plan of health services to those who need them. As defined by Mosadeghard (2013), healthcare is the consistency in providing efficacious, effective, and efficient healthcare services in relation to the latest clinical guidelines and standards, which meet the patients’ needs and adequately meet the providers’ needs as well. Certain factors are taken into consideration by healthcare workers when it comes to perceiving their work environment. These factors include the salaries and benefits they receive. Work environments that offer competitive salaries and benefits are perceived as ideal. On the other hand, work environments that offer subpar salaries and benefits are perceived as hostile. In fact, a study conducted by Akwataghibe, Samaranayake, Lemiere, and Dieleman (2013) in the public health sector of Nasarawa and Ondo states in Nigeria deduced that healthcare workers give importance to their salaries and benefits. With the use of a mixed-methods approach and randomized response techniques, they were able to survey 170 healthcare workers and interview 24 healthcare workers. Their results showed that the health workers perceived their salaries and benefits as inadequate and unable to meet their needs. In fact, 56% or 92 of the study’s respondents stated that they have additional earning arrangements just to address their living costs.
