Kathe also worked with sculpture. In this sculpture piece I can see women hurdled together. From the name given to this sculpture piece I am able to understand that these women are waving farewell to their husbands. War was an ongoing situation which continued for many century’s. Kathe lost her son in the war and later on her grandson in the second world war. I therefore infer that war affected everyone. The misery signified within the facial expressions of these women help me to understand the impact of war. The concern of wellbeing for their fellow husbands signify the chance of death. In the left side of this sculpture I notice two little children malnourished and tired. We therefore understand that poverty affected the majority of the population. By involving children into matters emphasises the theme of misery within this era. The children also looked scared and heartbroken that their dad might never return. By Kathe Kollwitz not adding colour signifies the serious approach given off by this sculpture. There was no colour to associate with the misery and grief that many was feeling. The theme of grief and misery is reflected in many of Kathe work. In 1938 she finished the sculpture. When this was shown at a local exhibition, it was seized by the Nazi government and described as being an example of "degenerate art". The Nazi government also banned Kathe Kollwitz from working as a doctor in Berlin. The act of foolishness shown here impacts the way Kathe created her artworks. As she was able to associate with these feelings she was able to create impactful creations. I find this work to truly symbols the grief that women had to deal with. The mood given off by this painting suggests the outlook on war. Overall, I find this as such a beautiful piece of
