The article that I got my information from was produced for South African History Online Fact: World war I ended in 1918 when USA helped Great Britain and it allies defeat Germany. This war caused poverty and somewhat determined what WWII was going to be like. During the end of WWI a peace treaty was written and signed by the countries that had won the war. This was called the peace treaty of Versailles. Adolf Hitler joined the Nazis at the conclusion of WWI and became their leader in 1921. The Nazis had groups of armed advocates who wore brown t shirts. These people were known as stormtroopers. He did not want to become one but his father had forced him to do so. He was 18 and he did not support the Nazis but his father did. His father said “it is your duty to serve the party that you support.” As Hans did not support the Nazis he did not want to serve them. However, if his father had found out that his son did not support the Nazis, one could only imagine what he would do. So in fear, Hans Schaefer the 3rd joined the Nazis as a stormtrooper. Four days after he joined he walked his first parade, held up his first Nazi symbol and watched the first of many innocent people get beat up for speaking out against the Nazis. He watched, just watched. He didn’t try and stop the beating. He didn’t join in on it, he just stood there 5ft away and watched. The brutality of being a stormtrooper hurt Hans every day, even though he was never the one actually doing the beating. He felt sorry for the people and sorry that he couldn’t help them. If he did help them he would be badly injured or even killed. Then one day Hans was forced by his fellow stormtroopers to beat up a man who had called the Nazis, “unfair and cruel”. Hans tried to plead with them in saying that he thought that his superiors were much better at it. They threatened that if Hans did not beat up that man, then they would beat him up. Hans beat up no one that day, but he was. Hans Schaefer the 3rd died on that day, but he died with dignity. He died standing up
