Why do people travel to Hawaii? What makes these islands special? What activities and culture can people experience? Millions visit the Hawaiian islands each year, which are known for their fascinating culture and mesmerizing landscapes. Hawaii has an area of almost eleven thousand square miles and about one million, four hundred thousand people live on the Hawaiian islands today (“Hawaii State Information”). The natives and citizens of the many islands value their land immensely, and they want to preserve it for future generations (“Hawaiian Customs & Traditions”). Hawaii is a unique state that has a strong focus on history, culture, traditions, and travel.

One major part of their culture includes the Hawaiian language they speak. The United Nations considered this language endangered because it started to diminish and in the 1980s, there were only a few young children who spoke Hawaiian; however, people have started efforts to revive the language. One main effort includes preschools that teach the kids Hawaiian to educate them about their culture. Since then, it has slowly started to make a comeback (“Hawaiian Culture & History”). The language of Hawaii attributes to making these islands unique and special. Another crucial part of the Hawaiian culture is the food. They value it immensely and they have numerous festivals dedicated to assorted types and styles of food. Some festivals include the Hawai’i Food and Wine Festival, The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival, Maui Onion Festival, Lānaʻi Pineapple Festival, and Kauaʻi Coconut Festival (“Hawaiian Culture & History”). They have many other festivals, which include assorted cuisines that make them diverse in their own ways. In Hawaii, feasts called ‘ahaʻaina or dinner parties called Pāʻina are routinely held. These traditional parties consist of people coming together, cooking, eating, and enjoying each other’s company (“Hawaiian Customs & Traditions”). A more commonly known event, a Lu’au, is simply a celebration of the region’s food and culture. Some popular foods include pork cooked in an underground oven with spices for flavor and assorted meats wrapped in taro leaves. Customary entertainment includes hula dancers and flame throwers (“Hawaiian Culture & History”). Almost all of the food on the islands are either made, caught, or grown locally and with local resources; some key ingredients that they have on the islands include fresh fish and a variety of produce.
