Before July 27, 1996 the United States did not know Richard Jewell. Richard Jewell was a security guard that was working at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics when bombed by Eric Rudoplh (FBI, 2016). Although, this was not a known fact in 1996, it is the perpetrator. Richard Jewell commendation was short lived for finding the other bag that had a bombing in it. Some of the local investigator thought that were FBI profilers thought that Richard Jewell was the bomber. The media and law enforcement played an intergonial role in Richard Jewell suspicion as the Olympic Park Bomber. With needing quick results, the FBI homed in on Jewell. Even though there was no solid evidence implicating Jewell the FBI had their man and just needed him to admit to the crime. Two FBI officers asked to record an interview with Jewell about being a first responder. The agents were instructed to read Jewell his Maranda Rights. When his lawyer arrived, the FBI let him go, because he was not under arrest. Later the Justice Department issued him a letter clearing him of all chargers. Finally, he sued all the media and newspapers that had implied accusations. The reporter that reports defamation must be accountable for destroying someone’s life. Defamation by implication "situations where all factual statements in a news story are probably true, but the overall gist of the story is false” (Hindman, 2007). The first Amendment of the Constitution states,” Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press” (Office of General Counsel, United States, & Office of the Director of National Intelligence, 2012).
