When registering for this class, a wave of worry ran through me, because I had minimal skill when it came to writing, particularly in the field of formal writing. The high school I attended was academically poor, we never wrote formal papers, just informal book and movie responses. Therefore I was apprehensive about this class. This course was quite intricate, but I attend skills that will aid me for the rest of my academic career. Rhetorical knowledge, critical inquiry, process, and conventions are all concepts I have acquired.
Journal Response The chapter “A Rhetoric for Writing Teachers” by Erika Lindemann describes how people use rhetoric unconsciously on their daily lives through writing or speaking. The term rhetoric is explained as being influential; teachers in particular are described to make use of rhetoric means to encourage their students into learning. Nevertheless, the rhetoric term has been under discussion over the years. The initials connotations given to this term were on the negative side; Lindemann describes how thinkers from old times expressed that the term rhetorical was mostly inclined towards the usage of appealing language leaving the importance of the message itself aside.
When tasked with writing a piece of prompted literature, anyone from age seven to a college professor has the same question plaguing their mind: how can I formulate my knowledge to fit this prompt? While it is valid to believe that the daunting task of writing is primarily in order to communicate an idea with the reader, it is quintessential to realize that writing from its most primal or sophisticated form serves as a mode of inquiry, as Stephen Jay Gould puts it, that allows the writer to intrapersonally reflect and perhaps even learn something from their own writing, while causing the reader of their work to self-analyze as well. It is easiest to illustrate when the writer first begins to ponder the prompt for the essay how writing
Over the course of English 1302 at Texas Tech, I feel that my skills as a writer improved significantly. When beginning the class, I knew little about writing a literature review or researched argument. With the help of my instructor’s lectures and the University Writing Center, I was able to effectively get my point across effectively while forming a well developed and well spoken manner. The advice given to me about argumentative essays and integrating sources helped significantly over the course of this class, and the skills learned in English 1302 helped me in other classes this semester when writing as well. One of the things I have learned that influenced me the most was my professor’s advice about an argument.
Everyone’s An Author with Readings by Andrea Lunsford, Michal Brody, Lisa Ede, Beverly J. Moss, Carole Clark Papper, and Keith Walters; is about how everyday writing is very closely related to academic writing. As a student myself, I understand the dislike for writing and the idea that it's not as useful as other things. This piece shows students that writing is so much more than that, but you can only see this if you understand the purpose and
Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be a challenge for me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to transition my thoughts from my mind to the paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of required writing ended up helping me in numerous ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me for college and real life by giving me a foundation of effective learning strategies.
By doing so, Roozen presents the concept of writing as a way to create context and rationalize our ideas and beliefs. Finally, writing can also useful in an academic or work setting, as most classes require writing in all forms, such as papers and emails or even discussion posts. While these are the uses for writing, according to the reading, there are of course limitations. These limitations may include an informal text, as it is unusual to write formally in our day-to-day lives. However, these limitations do not overpower Roozen’s message of the importance of
Irvin’s conclusions are that writing has its own format and set of rules that differs with each kind of writing and will be subject to change by the writer. Evaluation: Irvin uses expository writing to state how academic writing is argumentative and has its own set of writing myths. Writing myths can happen to any form of writing using critical thinking skills to address the issue. Irvin states in his article that the intended audience is college students. This reading is effective as the myths can help the reader to understand certain layout for the different parts of
Throughout this course, the assignments I have completed have assured that I have difficulties in writing. However, I have managed to learn and understand how to write a rhetorical analysis essay. In addition, I have learned the key elements of the genre science fiction and managed to read some interesting stories; such as, Understand and Dividing by Zero. Aside from this, I plan to show an image of stairs to symbolize the progression of my writing. I will utilize my notes and assignments to not only validate my struggles, but also to exhibit my improvement in writing.
As I was reading Melissa Duffy’s “Inspiration, and Craig Vetter’s “Bonehead Writing,” I found myself connecting with Vetter’s paper more than Duffy’s. I found that the presentation in “Bonehead Writing” to capture my attention, and that Vetter’s feelings about writing was similar to my opinion on writing. Through his wording and humor, I think Craig Vetter wrote the best essay. I find that the wording and presentation of an article or essay influences my opinion of the writer, and it affects how I receive the idea they are trying to present to me. Craig Vetter uses a blunt approach to convey his idea that writing is nearly impossible to teach, and describes writing as “A blood sport, a walk in the garden of agony every time out.”
I am now able to see the areas in which I lack in but I also recognize my strengths as well. To become a precise writer, you have to take the initiatives that will help you do so. These initiatives consist of working on different academic genres, planning and organizing material, identifying purpose and audience and for revising intentionally. It is also includes reading different types of texts and learning how to understand a writer’s argument and respond to the ideas of others.
