World War I was ultimately started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. The indirect causes were more significant to the outbreak of WWI than any direct cause. There are several causes that forced Europe into the “Great War” such as militarism, alliance systems, imperialism, and militarism.
World War I was one of the very first wars that had a global effect on the whole world. According to the book about WWI, The Guns of August, A shocking 32 countries took part in it. In the very first stages of WWI, the U.S stayed neutral, and had good reasons for doing so, too. However, the U.S eventually became entangled in the conflict anyway. Three leading causes forced the U.S to join WWI.
World War I was a global war which mainly took place in Europe, involving countries on the Triple Alliance such as Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy and their opposing countries, Russia, France and Great Britain, also known as the Triple Entente. The war took place from 28 July, 1914 until 11 November, 1918, killing more than 9 million combatants and impacting many aspects of a nation. Three of the underlying causes of World War 1 were militarism, alliance systems and nationalism. Militarism is a belief that a country should maintain a strong army which is prepared to defend its country. Countries involved in World War I believed that militarism was important for a country’s pride, success, and honor.

In July 28, 1914 to November 11,1918 World War 1 took place where over 17 million lives were lost and over 20 million wounded soldiers. This war was between Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the United States against Germany, and Austria-Hungary. The main cause of World War 1 was militarism where many European countries kept increasing their size of their army and navy without a war going on. In the article “What Was the Underlying Cause of World War 1?”
“In Britain and Europe, no event, is less forgotten than World War 1, or ‘The Great War,’ as it was called until 1939” stated by Michael Korda. World War 1 or also known as ‘The Great War’, was an worldwide conflict from 1914 to 1918. A big cause for the war was imperialism. The war was fought between the Central powers ( Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey) and the Allied cause (France, Great Britain, and later U.S.) U.S. remained neutral and sold goods to both sides until 1917, U.S. then later declared war on Germany for many reasons. The contributions from U.S. to the Allied Cause helped turn the course of the war.
World War One was a war unlike any other before or after; as time went on, countries from all around the world were dragged into European affairs, which led to powers exhausting resources to the fullest extent. Total War required all members of society to contribute and take on jobs of much significance that had lasting effects on culture. Throughout World War One both soldiers and civilians endured similar sufferings; however, the roles of each were significantly different from one another and they were affected by the war in various ways.
Herbert Hoover once said, “Older men declare war. But it is the youth that must fight and die.” This aphorism corresponds with the novel, All Quiet on the Western Front and the movie, “War Horse”. World War I, also known as the Great War or the War to End All Wars, however, despite its glorious names was neither great nor the last war. Two powerful and influential alliances fought on the battlefield until November 11, 1918, “a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front” (296).
WW1 is known as the first modern war because it saw the incorporation of mechanical weapons. The Central Powers and Allies both used a variety of weapons such as machine guns, chemical weapons , clothing, biplanes, artillery, tanks, grenades, and rifles. These weapons were state of the art for the early 20th century. These weapons caused casualties to skyrocket as the Allies and the Central Powers were in a stalemate.

World War I is one of the largest and most violent events in human history. Its reach across the globe is much larger than many seem to think. Most literature along with public knowledge seems to focus on the western front when overall there was 8 major fronts during the First World War. The war’s clash of old tactics with new war machines meant many unneeded casualties. I say unneeded because many think the war was useless, and it proved nothing.
World war 1, also known as The Great War, was a global war in Europe that began on 28th July 1914 and ended on 11 November 1918. More than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilized in one of the largest wars in history. Over 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians died as a result of the war. The war was one of the deadliest conflicts in world history and has been a worldwide clash. A lynx is any of the four species within the Lynx genus of medium-sized wild cats. The name "lynx" originated in Middle English via Latin from the Greek word λύγξ, derived from the Indo-European root leuk- ("light, brightness") in reference to the luminescence of its reflective eyes.
World War I was a conflict that permanently changed the lives of millions of people. It caused societal and individual trauma and led to crashes in the economies of many places around the world. World War I was a world war to an extremely large extent as the majority of the world’s population was involved. Although some may argue that World War I was not a world war because of the fact that not every country, empire, or region, was actively in battle, the factor that debunks this claim was the colonial empires because they introduced their colonized areas and countries into the war to fight and be of service. These contributions to the war came in the form of BIPOC Soldiers/troops and laborers.
“European nations began World War 1 with a glamorous vision of war, only to be psychologically shattered by the realities of the trenches. The experience changed the way people referred to the glamour of battle; they treated it no longer as a positive quality but as a dangerous illusion.” –Virginia Postrel. World War 1 was one of the most horrendous, life shifting wars in history that began in Europe and lasted for 4 years (1914 - 1918) besides affecting 9 million lives. The world was so destructive due to the intensity of the fighting and the deadly weapons.
