World War I in Britain is known as a Total War. Indeed, it is argued that the conflict was decided as much on the domestic front as on the military front and that the contribution of the civilian population was vital to the war effort. Everybody in Britain was a participant to the war. The four years of warfare could not have been sustained without an enormous physical effort provided by the population. A few days after the war started, the Defense of the Realm Act was installed. This act of 1914 granted the State extensive powers, and one of the main measure taken was food rationing in 1918.
