Life became hell on earth for Jews. During World II, millions of Jews were sent to die at concentration camps. Death and cruelty surrounded the Jews while they were there; they saw atrocities committed to kids, babies, women, and men. Even throughout it all, some managed to survive even while surrounded by death, and even more, were able to keep their faith. The Jews were physically able to survive by making the rations given to them last and eating the food; they also were able to survive spiritually by praying to God. The Jews stayed physically alive by making their food last and eating terrible and unhealthy food. Another way they survived physically was by eating the sickening food served to them. Some people decide to die rather than eat the food. A girl living in these camps urged her, “sisters who refused the moldy soup, the sawdust bread, that to eat was to resist” (Document C 17-21). The food given to the Jews was terrible, but eating the food was a way for the Jews to resist, it allowed them to resist the death of the Nazis, and it gave the Jews the nutrition they need to live another day. To conclude, some Jews found ways to stay alive while going through the hardships and cruelty of concentration camps through the use of food. Finally, the Jews survived spiritually during their time in concentration camps by continuing to pray to God during the hardships. Even though the Jews were going through horrific times, each Jewish man, “Recite Kiddsih for his parents, for his children, and himself"( Wiesel 68).
