In this day and age, traveling is easier than ever. No longer is travel done by horse-drawn carriage over muddy roads. Now people can simply hop on a plane and arrive at their destination within hours. To make things even simpler, flights and hotels can be reserved from smart phones now. Because of the ease in which people can now travel, it has become incredibly popular. Many people see travel as a good hobby, or a fun vacation. However, most people do not realize how important traveling is, especially for young people. Traveling while young is important because it can teach the traveler things they may not be able to learn otherwise, not only about the world and its many cultures, but also about themselves.

While traveling is very important for young people, it is also very expensive. After airfare, hotels, food, and money to travel around the destination, it can rack up quite the bill. So when planning a trip, it is important to be smart about it, and use all the resources that are available to get the best deals. “Nine Tips to Travel Cheap (But Not Stupid)” by Whitney Blair Wyckoff, found on npr.org, gives some tips to save money while traveling. Some of these tips include researching the destination, being flexible with dates and locations, and avoiding spending unnecessary money. These tips all seem logical. Researching the destination can help to find cheap activities and food. Being flexible with plans while there can help to get the most out of the money spent. And only spending the money that is necessary will obviously save money, as well. The tip that doesn’t seem to fit in with all the rest at first is this, “Do not be too cheap.” This does not seem to make any sense when purposefully trying to travel cheap, but upon further examination it becomes clear why this tip is included. If, while trying to save all the money they can, people pass on activities and attractions because they think it will save them some money, they might regret it (Wyckoff, 2009).
