By grasping that Yahweh can be observed as the Trinitarian “Father,” and Adonai can be observed as the Trinitarian “Son,” the message of this passage becomes clear. This prophetic messianic hope is evident throughout the entire Psalm. Therefore, it is a royal psalm with messianic allegations that conclude in the person of Jesus Christ. It seems logical to state the reason for Yahweh to speak this through David; to provide hope to His people for the future. Jesus points out this sign when talking with the Pharisees,

“He said to them, How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet?” (Mat 22:43-44).

In v.2, it is evident that the messiah would come from Zion (or Davidic King), but this message would be confused. However, the messiah would still rule in the midst of His enemies, which, according to Matt. 22, the Pharisees would be, at that time, the enemy. The implicit message is one of Christ conquering the world and uniting everything under Himself.
