The role of reason shows itself often throughout the novel. Pi Patel often finds himself having to use reason in order to solve challenges as the novel progresses. One example of this was when he discussed his reasoning for being a follower of Hinduism. Pi reveals this to us when he whispered, “I became loyal to these sense impressions even before I knew what they meant or what they were for.” Pi is implying that even though he is not certain that religion is true, he has fate that if he believes in it, he will receive Hinduism’s benefits. In addition to that, his reasoning is guiding him to follow multiple religions at once, since he firmly believes in Christianity and Islam.

At this point, Pi tells the men about his journey that lasted 277 days. Of course, the Japanese officials do not believe the story with the animals. Pi uses his reasoning to fabricate a completely different story from what he initially told them. This seems contradictory since Pi is an honest, young man. When one realizes that Pi is very avid at using reasoning, they would find that Pi is being completely just. Reasoning was a huge puzzle piece to Pi’s survival at sea for 277 days.
