Religion is an important theme in “Life Of Pi”. It is shown throughout the novel and you can see Pi’s religious and spiritual characteristics grow throughout the story. The novel begins with an introduction of Pi’s childhood. Religion is important to Pi and his family, who are dedicated to Hinduism. As Pi grows he becomes more curious of other religions and starts exploring them. He is interested in three religions and starts to take an understanding towards them. He begins practicing christianity and islam as he is continuing to practice hinduism. Pi gets criticised by all three leaders of the religions along with his family.

He was trying to figure out what he believed in. for him, turns out to be a mix of three different religions, hinduism, islam, and christianity. Yet, the three different religious followers are against this. They tell him that he can only follow one of the religions and make an argument of the other two. But this is where they must think carefully, the author used the nature of conflict to show the strangeness that all religions are the same without knowing it.
They all argued their ways of how they admire their god(s) in their own ways; one had multiple gods while the other only had one.regardless of their differences, at the end of the day Yann Martel, the author, wanted to show that faith was a common appreciation of all three religions; which is the teachings of religions or belief in god(s). This actuality called “faith” is what connects all three, and was lost to all the religious followers. They were too busy creating a border between each other following the organized religion.
