A physical Education Teacher, whom just recently became employed at a Secondary College was given a Year 10 Core PE class as part of their teaching allotment. This one semester subject was the last semester of compulsory Physical education for the students involved after which time students only undertook further physical education studies if they elected to do so. Therefore within these classes, students came to class with varying degrees of interest, enthusiasm, and desire to participate. The subject and its content had changed significantly over the previous 3 years, and the delivery of the curriculum swayed, mostly dependant on the teacher’s interests and focus at the time. They therefore developed an initial philosophical statement that outlined the vision for a successful program that engaged students. This statement was then proposed to all teaching staff within the Physical Education Faculty and feedback and thoughts were sought. Feedback was given and the Philosophical Statement was modified and adapted to take into consideration all stakeholders input.
“Mission directs our attention to a future state of affairs” (Terry, 2012. Kindle Location 1150). This statement clearly highlights action taken by the new teacher in developing a direction forward for the subject. The action was inclusive and considered the just method of developing a mission that was reflective of everyone’s ideals and objectives for student outcomes. By asking for feedback from teachers within the faculty, the new teacher also demonstrated humility by humbling their beliefs and highly valuing the contributions from the other teaching
