Alex is a tall Canadian with blond hair and blue eyes from the book Forbidden City who I will be analyzing. First, Alex is very curious about history and wars. Some proof of this is on page 4, where he says, “I had model airplanes hanging on threads from my bedroom ceiling. Three tanks guarded my dresser. An armoured personnel carrier defended my desk.”

In the novel, Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes, the reader is presented with the main character, Johnny, a fourteen-year-old silversmith apprentice to Mr. Lapham, the master smith of the Lapham house, in the time of the Revolutionary War. Throughout the book, this character is portrayed as prideful and arrogant.
In "Martin", Vaca, the main character, is introduced as a sibling and playmate of a poor family in the heart of a lower class urban area called Tracy. Vaca's sibblings are faced with a neiborhood newcomer named Martin, a boy who is assumed to be a glutton, due to his large belly size. In response to Martin's rather overweight apperance, Vaca becomes extremely angered. Considering the unwealthy status of the family, they are not accessed to the convenience of plentiful amounts of food. Based on this, they assume Martin's greed, and therefore attack him out of disgust.
In the book “ Johnny Tremain” written by Esther Forbes, the theme pride really stands out in the beginning of the book. In this book, it repeatedly shows pride as a bad thing. Pride is one of the few things in the world that isn’t just good or evil. Pride is only evil if you let it become more important than everything else. This is a quote by C.Lewis “ pride is a spiritual cancer: it eats up the very possibility of love, contentment, or even common sense,’”
“I heard the distant whistle of a passing train, and I wished I could get on it and go far away, to a place without struggle meetings, without class status, without confessions.” - Ji-Li Jiang. This quote is from The Red Scarf Girl, a memoir of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. This is a book about a 12 year old girl, Ji-Li Jiang, witnessing the Cultural Revolution. The quote is her wishing away all her current problems.
Max Vandenburg impacted Liesel Meminger the most during her childhood because they were able to relate their lives and they shared interests. This made Liesel like being around Max, and she wanted the best for him because she knew the hard situation he was in. They looked out for each other like no other two characters in the book. Max’s background story was really hard. He lost his father as a child, he and his family were targeted by the Nazi’s because they are Jewish, and he has had to be cautious his whole life.
My favorite scene in the novel: “Dragon Hoops” occurs in chapter eight, where Jeevin Sandhu, an important starter on the Bishop O’Dowd men’s basketball team uses support and courage to deal with obstacles such as new environments and discrimination. Jeevin grew up in a suburb near the San Fransisco Bay Area, called Union City - where he quickly fell in love with the game of basketball. However, although the city had lots of cultural diversity, once on the court where he shines, Jeevin is often the only Punjabi kid. Unfortunately, due to his Sikh religion and Indian background, he is often the target of hateful discrimination. One quote that stood out to me is where Jeevin explains how racism against certain minorities has not gone away: “...

In the novel “Hate List”, Valerie Leftman is to return to school five months after her boyfriend, Nick shot several fellow classmates in the school cafeteria. Most of the people shot were on a list Valerie and Nick made and called the hate list. A majority of the school community believes that Valerie was aware of Nick’s plan to kill the kids (she wasn’t aware) despite the fact that Valerie saved someone’s life and got shot in the process. In “Hate List”, Valerie and everyone around her must pick up the broken pieces of fear and sadness after the tragedy. This creates a story that is both universal and so unique that it will leave the reader changed on a fundamental level.
John Updike, author of the novel The Witches of Eastwick, comments upon the daily lives of three witches in a small town. It is clear that their magic powers set their lives apart, but things become truly strange for them when a new man, named Darryl Van Horne, moves into a mansion nearby. Although he is the antagonist, his sexual desires overtake the story in ridiculous ways.
