Some people in todays world can easily make the mistake of characterizing something without knowing anything about it. These assumptions can often negatively influence how a person thinks and limit themselves to other possibilities. As a result, problems can arise if the issues are never addressed. If there is one lesson I have learned, “You Can’t Judge a Book by Its Cover.” Early uses of the phrase can be traced back to the early 1st and 2nd century AD. Published by Roman author Juvenal, he occasionally wrote in his satires “fronti nulla fides” which translates to “never have faith in the front.” Over time, that idea then transpired into other translations from Latin to English. Following these assumptions would cause one to overlook a subject and conclude its value without much thought. For example, as seen in todays media is the problem of racism. Racism continues to be a leading cause of hatred stirred by those that are quick to judge without any knowledge . A similar situation appears in a novel written by Harper Lee, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” In the story, Boo Radley an African American living in the South during the 1930s is wrongfully accused of rape. Lead by a white driven community, everyone is in favor of charging Radley without a fair trial. As the story unfolds Radley is found innocent as a result of the victim, who happens to be white, lies to get of trouble and avoid embarrassment amongst her community. Without the proper knowledge and proof of evidence presented in the court, Boo Radley would have been wrongfully accused and sentenced to death.
