While people participate in various methods of everyday reading and writing, there are extensive benefits to be gained from extending the experience to apply these abilities to literature. In the beginning chapter of Literature: A Portable Anthology, third edition the benefits of reading, analyzing, and writing about literature is explored, while also explaining literature class expectations, at a college or university level. Reading literature expands horizons by exposing readers to various perspectives, locations, and interactions, which molds opinions, attitudes, and behaviors. Dana Giola believes literature is a crucial part of life, especially for young adults. In her passage “Why Literature Matters” she describes that young Americans' interests have diminished for literature. She persuades her audience using ethos, logos, and cause-and-effect reasoning. Giola starts off her passage by describing the interest young Americans showed in arts which “actually diminished”(Giola 1) because of how they “taught reading comprehension”(Giola 2).
In college the number of literature diminished and the attendance declined. The author includes “The most worrisome finding in the 2002 study, however, is the declining percentage of Americans, especially young adults, reading literature.” Furthermore, if the decline of literature is going down in college, it will become a problem throughout the student's whole life.

The essay provides reliable facts and evidence from scientific studies over the years. Gioia claims, with facts, that the detreimental decline in literature reading has affected more than just our reading skills. In the beginning of the book, this person has a sniper grafted into his arm and is supposed to take out its targets. While this is happening the one bird kid falls down to save the other bird kid from getting hit, but Devin misses the main target and hits the flying dog. What ends up happening is devin kills himself because he was a suicide sniper(kills his target then kills himself to not be in trouble).

The consideration of the works I analyzed during this class helped to give me more understanding of what the reader would be looking for in a fantasy adventure for younger readers. This helped my writing in a way knowing the story alone is not enough. These specific authors, and the way they kept the story moving, helped to show me that there needs to be something to hook and keep the reader's attention so that they will continue through the story. There needs to be depth in not only the character but also the setting and throughout the entire story.
