Objective: Amongst the various routes of drug delivery for curing the buccal disease, mucoadhesive disc is one of them. The aim of this work was to design a mucoadhesive disc and formulation studies. Material&Methods: Discs containing 10% stem bark extract of ziziphus jujuba were formulated by Zinc Oxide, Glycerin, Carbopol 34, PVP K30 and Gelatin as excipients. These materials were mixed and changed to granules and then discs through direct compression. Properties such as in vitro and in vivo mucoadhesion, drug release, water uptake, disintegration were carried out. Results: Properties of the discs showed excellent mucoadhesion and released high amount of the active ingredients (48%) immediately and completed after approximately first hour. They had a good adhesion in buccal cavity, no irritation and they can be suitable for the treatment of irritation, pain, and discomfort associated with Aphthous. …show more content…
Based on Iranian traditional documents, buccal inflammatory disease is very important and a separate chapter is devoted to the topic of ulcers and could be searched as “Gholaa”[5, 6]. It is a kind of ulcer that affects surface of the mouth and tongue and it can even be exceeded inner parts of them. In the definition of wounds, it is in corrosive lesions groups and deep infectious ulcers [5]. Meantime, based on these topics and on traditional references, the anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties of Ziziphus jujuba [7], the plant was chosen . Local practitioners also use powder of stem bark of Jujube to cure Aphthous. There for, it was decided to prepare of a mocuadhesive disc from Jujube stem bark extract. The strategy for designing is principally based on the utilization of mixture of polymers with suitable excipients such as Carbopol and PVP k30. 1.1. The present work includes the following
