Appearance vs. Reality In George Orwell's novel 1984 there is a recurring theme of appearance v. reality through Governmental organizations and people masquerading as if everything is perfect in their day to day lives. The culprit that created this mirage is known as Big Brother or BB. BB aims to brainwash society into thinking that nothing is going wrong and that nothing will ever go wrong. Censorship, and brainwashing remain the most used resources in obtaining this goal. BB censors media to make sure there is nothing circulating in the community that could be slanderous or even truthful. In their society, they even have a department developed strictly to alter physical proof of specific events, this department is known as the Ministry of Truth. These monitoring systems can range from tracking devices to security cameras. The only device that is not bugged is the telephone. A common claim that might be used for these devices is that if an employee is working for a specific company, and they have a large amount of monitoring systems put into place for their employees, companies often claim that since employees are working for their company, and they are on company property, everything that the employee is doing, is the business of the company. The employees know that they are being watched. The phrase ‘BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” is used often used to remind citizens and employees that they are always being monitored. This high level of surveillance can only correlate with some level of paranoia of fearing of losing the nation and its people, only showcasing how truly fragile the system is and how easily it could be brought
