In the book “1984” by George Orwell, the story displays a dystopian world where totalitarian governments are in control of the people's daily lives, banning certain ideas of thought, restriction in self-control, and having people all on the same level with one another in society to maintain control. This way of bringing “equality” to society has its drawbacks, where the leader of this society, “Big Brother”, has taken away basic human rights. With no existence of laws in Oceania, 1984 ignores the rights that are protected by the US constitution. Throughout the book, there are banning in books and new ideas of revelation, sometimes twisting facts around such as “2+2=5”(Orwell). Oceania thrives without the need for science or any sort of education that is either prohibited or manipulated into serving the party, compared to the United States where schools teach the arts and sciences, funding into these areas of knowledge and having no limits in writing. Compared to 1984, the US constitution has a section where this is legal and permissible, “To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries;”(Congress). Oceania manipulates the freedom of human thought and responds to any sort of “rebellion” with violence, having spies to take down those who speak wrongly of the government with the result of either being vaporized or sent to a labor camp, the consequences are seen when Parsons was sent to the Ministry of Love for reformation because his daughter told on her father. Forcing people to obey whatever the government says, although not all crimes are due to rebellion, can be mere honesty when Syme also gets vaporized by the words he spoke. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”(Congress), protests, the right to talk bad towards the government and the right to change their leaders in power is the complete opposite of 1984 as that is what would take their power over
