Around the world, there is a common issue of human beings not being street smart but they are extremely book smart. In SE Hinton’s novel “The Outsiders” a 14-year-old boy, Ponyboy Curtis, has that same problem. He happens to be very book-smart but claims not to use his head in tough situations. Multiple events show Pony avoids using his brain. This is proven when he tells Randy he killed Bob even though he knows it was not him, he goes to the rumble knowing he already feels dreadful, and at last, he risks his own life. Ponyboy was deeply depressed and not in the right state of mind when Johnny and Dally were in the hospital. When Johnny had killed Bob they decided to run away to the church in Windrixville which isn't a good idea but not only that he started smoking more in the church to calm himself down. Cigarettes do calm people down however it is still very bad for kids and Potentially they could cause dreadful lung cancer. As they were leaving for Dairy Queen with Dally he left his cigarette still burning. The source of the fire is unknown but it could be a possibility that it could be the cigarette. This is also a claim that Ponyboy does not use his head. Although all those things happened the big claim is when the church was burning, Johnny went to the fire to save the kid. Ponyboy came running into the church after him. Although he didn't get hurt as badly as Johnny because Dally's jacket saved him it was very Vicious. “Suddenly, in the red glow and the haze, I remembered wondering what it was like in a burning ember, and I thought: Now I know, it's a red hell.” page… . and still he didn't use his head nonetheless he saved the kids.
