By conducting an A-B-C analysis chart, it is clear that his noncompliance has been reinforced in the classroom. In order to reduce Giovanni’s outbursts, we must eliminate it and replace it with positive behaviors. This would take an effort on both the assistant teachers and the general education teacher. The student’s frustration intensifies when engaged in conflict. One example of this is when the teacher argues with the student over the completion of his homework assignments. As opposed to his reading assignments, when the student is praised for completing a math assignment his composure is maintained. Instead of disciplining the student, it would be helpful to set up a positive behavioral intervention system in the classroom. Rules and routines must be modeled for the student, so that he can benefit from the time spent in the program. The teacher can use we instead of you statements, such as we need to get on task rather than I need you to get started your homework. If the student is on task he gets immediate praise from the teacher or a reward, but if he breaks the rules he is given feedback and is given a chance to correct himself. Consequences are given when the student is consistently breaking the rules, such as a phone call home and the loss of free time.
