Childhood was the one point in time when the world seemed very small. The only important things in life were video games and after-school snacks. The days passed by slowly, but they were carefree. The early years in adolescence was the peak of innocence. Not only did parents care for every need, but they did everything they could to protect this naivety. Ideally, childhood is supposed to be the happiest period of time in one’s existence. There are many reasons behind this theory, one being that a child is blissfully unaware of the horrors happening around the world. This makes reality that much harder to face. In the novel, citizens residing in the Brave New World are conditioned to enjoy the same things. It certainly makes finding pleasure easier, but is it truly happiness if it was something that was conditioned into someone? This doubt is shown most prominently in the citizens of the Alpha caste category. They were created to be smart, but not too smart. The ones who have managed to break out of the conditioning and gain a sense of individuality are clearly not satisfied with the life the World State has to offer. Helmholtz is the epitome of the perfect Alpha Plus. Although everyone was aware of his mental excess, he still has a good reputation. He is described as very attractive and had a lot of options when it came to who he wanted to have sex with. The modern world can find temporary joy in these things, but their happiness cannot be sustained by those three things alone. The thing humans value the most are the relationships with other people, which is nonexistent in the Brave New World. There is a concept of needing “meaning” behind an action to genuinely be happy. Experiences have meaning behind them, but a brand new car does not. What constitutes this separation? True happiness is more long-term.
