Including Samuel, a documentary about the complexities of inclusion. Like so many other issues in our lives, the solutions are far from clear. The speaker, Habib, tells the story of his son, Samuel, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at just one years old; along with others that have a disabilities and how their lives have been affected by inclusion. Principals and teachers spoke about how inclusion has made an impact on the environment at their schools. Including Samuel is about inclusion of all different types of people. Pembrook Academy wanted all children to be in the same classroom, no matter how difficult it would be. Although, there were still few special education rooms if needed. “All kids with the right support, the right technology, can learn the general curriculum” (teacher at Pembrook Academy). Alana Malfy, a young girl who was told she would be institutionalized by the age of five, attended Pembrook Academy. “It takes teachers that make lesson plans where all kids can be included and participate” (Principal). Some teachers say it helped them become better teachers. Haggerty was another school with full inclusion. Nathanielle Oriellana, a boy with Autism attended Haggerty. He was originally in a special education classroom but started behaving poorly, and was not academically challenged. The goal at Haggerty was to show the strengths and weaknesses of each student. Teachers at Haggerty believe they are able to become better teachers through intensive professional development. Inclusion schools benefit both the students and the teachers.
Samuel attended Beaver Meadows Elementary School. The principal believes inclusion is the best way for everyone to learn. He thinks that not having inclusion would break down the community. Although, some of the typical students at Beaver Meadows feel that Samuel is the center of attention. Starting attending inclusive schools at a young age will help children prepare for life and school in the future. It will help them acknowledge differences and start to accept them.
