Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. Stress is a fact of human nature and there is no way that you can avoid it. Everyone has been stressed at least one time in their life if not more than once. What is stressful for you may not be stressful to someone else. Being stressed can cause the body to change in many ways, some worse than others, but it affects everyone differently. When you are going through stressful times, it may seem like there is absolutely nothing you can do. In reality, there is more that you can do to manage or reduce your stress than you think. Some people may not be able to tell that they are stressing, but some others can feel there they will be stressed before it is apparent that they are stressing. Acute stress has several affects, but it does not cause as much damage as long-term stress simply because it is short-term. One symptom of acute stress is emotional distress. Emotional distress can include the feelings of anxiety, depression, irritability and the development of post-traumatic stress disorder as well as muscle pain, stomach and gastrointestinal disorders. Severe acute stress may even cause high blood pressure and can also lead to heart attacks. Considering that acute stress is short-term, many people do not seek help. Finding different ways to cope with this stress cause lessen the amount of damage liable to take place. Episodic acute stress is when you experience acute stress more frequently. People who can never see the “bright-side” of things are always victims of episodic acute stress. Someone who faces this kind of stress are called “worry-warts”. Worry warts are people who tend to dwell on difficulty or troubles. Often, they describe themselves as having "a lot of nervous energy."
