In the historical fiction book, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. The character statement, though Salva has gone through so much, he persists, is proven in many ways throughout the story. Two pieces of evidence to prove the statement, are shown towards the beginning and end of the story. The claim is generally expressed shortly after the main character, Salva’s, uncle gets shot by the Rebel soldiers. Though Salva was feeling down at times, he always remembers his uncle's words, “You need to walk only as far as those bushes.” (Park 53) and keeps on fighting for his life, which makes him persistent. The claim is also shown when Salva's friend, Marial, gets viciously dragged away by a lion in the middle of the night. Despite this obstacle, Salva keeps on walking and bounces back. Linda Sue Park shows this especially well when Salvas uncle gets shot by the rebel soldiers and, how he persists through this obstacle towards the middle of the story. Despite facing the loss of his uncle, he carried on. Linda Sue Park writes, “But how can I not go on? They would want me to survive” (Park 72). In this text, it is clear that Salva is feeling worried and discouraged after facing this obstacle.
