The genre of Elizabethan romance came about during the 15th century, which was known as the English Renaissance period ( One of the most notable poets was named William Shakespeare. Shakespeare wrote in the genre of romantic poetry, and one of his plays that fits into this genre is called Midsummer Night’s Dream. This comedic drama challenges Elizabethan romance by taking the idea of love, the purest form of affection, and modifying this feeling involuntarily by having it attained through magic spells and potions. The concept of love occurring blindly is being discussed, as it is stated that love is more than what you see in a person. Shakespeare’s attitude towards love is evident in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and sets the tone of the play, that there are different types of love that makes it complicated. One of the main conflicts in A Midsummer Night’s Dream is forbidden love. Hermia is being forced by her father Egeus, to marry Demetrius.
