Nurses provide a vital role in the health care system. Sure, we may not be able to diagnose or write prescriptions. However, we are the main advocates for the patients. We also stand by the side of our patients through their entire hospital stay. It is the nurse who notices the smallest changes in their patients.
Nursing is an age old profession of compassion, encouragement, and support to the injured. With the development of learned abilities nurses are able to heal by easing suffering, treatment, and encouragement of the care of people, families, communities, and populations. Professional nursing roles entail practices based on evidence that are defensive, recuperative, and promotive when focusing on a holistic manner. Developing professional roles of nurses are highly recognized and nurtured. A nurse plays an essential role in the healthcare system.
It’s about us being gentle and caring in the way we give care and also about us not only looking after their physical needs but looking after them holistically. Doctors are generally held higher in the hierarchy of hospitals, while one may think nurses simply check their blood pressure and give them shots. That assumption can not be more wrong. Nurses are the backbone of a hospital, and they have worked hard over hundreds of years to get to where they are today.
It is the person and their physical, emotional, and psychological needs that are the basic focus of nursing’s attention. In order to care for a patient, the nurse must incorporate all these needs. For example, providing reassurance with an anxious patient who just finished hip surgery. Care also plays a major part when taking care of a unique patient. Caring influences my personal philosophy because it is the most important aspect of nursing.
Without thinking twice, when you hear the word ‘nurse’, what comes to your mind? Perhaps a hard-working person whose goals are to enhance ones health or someone who you can trust to help benefit your needs. These positive thoughts are what nurses would like to convey through their professions. However, some people who have not experienced care from a nurse can sometimes describe nurses based on their reputations from the 1800’s as well as inaccurate TV characters. These reputations include uneducated, illiterate, rough, inconsiderate, immoral, alcoholic, and prostitution.
The public also believe that nurses’ jobs are to do menial tasks and dirty works. They think that nursing is a job full with nasty, dirty and unpleasant tasks (Morris, 2010). This is because the nurses have to do lots of procedure that involved with the patient’s body discharged such as cleaning their poop and urine as well as changing the diapers. Some people see this thing as dirty but some of them see this in a positive way as not everyone will be able to do this job. In addition, people also view nurses as servant because they think the nurses’ job is only to change the bed sheet, change the patient’s clothes and diapers and also serve meal for the patient.
Introduction The idea of how nurses can conduct themselves in a daily basis for some can be viewed as they have it easy or least make it look easy and for others it’s world’s best job. The truth is being a nurse is very difficult job and it can be very labor intensive and very rewarding at the same time. Just think every time you go into the doctor’s office or have an overnight stay in the hospital what all to do your nurse during their shift?
Being a nurse is not always as easy and picture perfect as people paint it to be. A nurse is expected to act perfectly professional, even when tears, anger and all-around emotions are begging to come out. A nurse must always be the one that has their life together, especially when others do not. They are there to be the ones to hold and care for others in desperate times of need. Nurses are expected to be more than just a nurse, but rather an advocate, caregiver, support system and professional.
Health Nurses need to emphasize preventative health, cure for diseases, and health promotion. Nursing Virginia Henderson defined nursing as: “The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery (or to peaceful death) that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge.” (Vera,2014) Henderson states that “The nurse is the only twenty four hour worker. We are the only people that will say we stay with you.
It includes the promotion of health, the prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people” (WHO, 2018). This means that nurses care for both those who are sick and unable to care for themselves, healthy people, and the dead. One of the duties of the nurse is to educate the patient and public. As such nurses also go into the communities to create awareness on recent developments and how to manage our environment to prevent the inhabitants from becoming sick. Nursing to me is showing that love; care and compassion to those in need.
Importance of nurses A nurse is a health care professional who is engaged in the practice of nursing. Nurses are men and women who are responsible (along with other health care professionals) for the treatment, safety and recovery of acutely or chronically ill or injured people, health maintenance of the healthy, and treatment of life-threatening emergencies in a wide range of health care settings. Nurses may also be involved in medical and nursing research and perform a wide range of non-clinical functions necessary to the delivery of health care. Nurses develop a plan of care, sometimes working collaboratively with physicians, therapists, the patient, the patient 's family and other team members.
