Something that has been prevalent in our society for the past few decades is the image of racism; whether it be through social media, films or magazines. Unfortunately, the images we have witnessed regarding racism are very negative. These images often show the group who is being the victim of this behavior too often be at fault; almost saying that because they are a certain color or from a certain culture that they are set up for failure based on their actions. This is the case in the movie “The Help”, where viewers watch black women become domestic workers for white women in the southern states during the civil rights movements. Becoming aware of my own stereotypes, prejudices and biases is vital for the growth of my career in becoming a health care provider. I will be able to connect at a more personal level when I am diversely knowledgeable on many cultures. Especially if one culture is more dominate in the area I intend to practice as a Dietician in. I actually feel it goes beyond just all health care providers, but as individuals respecting each other. I feel that the more I become educated in this course, continuously having an open mind; I will find that I may be stereotyping, prejudice or biased and may not even have realized it.
I think it is really difficult to experience a week without encountering no less than a few episodes where somebody or a gathering of individuals is being stereotyped. Whether it originates from jokes, TV, funnies, or simply listening to individuals discuss other individuals, stereotyping is around constantly. Stereotyping can be a helpful process because people already know what the assumption of certain stereotypes, so some people try to prove others wrong by not being a part of the stereotype assumptions. I think stereotype is wrong because everyone is not the same or don’t do the same thing based on race. I don’t see how stereotype can be useful.

Being a nurse is not always as easy and picture perfect as people paint it to be. A nurse is expected to act perfectly professional, even when tears, anger and all-around emotions are begging to come out. A nurse must always be the one that has their life together, especially when others do not. They are there to be the ones to hold and care for others in desperate times of need. Nurses are expected to be more than just a nurse, but rather an advocate, caregiver, support system and professional.
While people often think stereotyping is harmless, judging someone on how they act or look can actually affect one’s self esteem, by making them often rethink every move they make. One way stereotyping affects others is, when the recipient of the stereotype turns around and treat others in the same manner. This creates a ripple effect from one person to another. In addition, it can cause mood swings, that can create long term issues, no doubt affecting one’s self esteem. Such as having to be put onto antidepressant medication.
How are your everyday life experiences away from home when you are exposed to a culturally fragmented society? Do you experience ‘cultural shock’? I once read an article about an Irish woman who went away to Australia looking for better job opportunities. What she had to say about being away from home has opened me up and made me more confident and resonate with my own experiences. My stay in the capital has been introspective, enlightening and fun.

manager perceiving an employee as being better than others because they both support the same football team or because they grew up in the same neighborhood. The tendency to draw a picture or judge another individual based on one or few characteristics is called the halo effect. For example, management might be laying employees off and decide to let go of one individual not based on actual performance, but because there were other employees that stood out or had a halo effect such as being friends with the manager. Today, we are living in a very complex social environment. In today’s society, people are stereotyped in many different ways depending which category an individual is located in. Everybody has their own misconceptions of others, but how did stereotypes turn out to create false images for certain groups of people? Misconceptions are views or opinions that appear to be incorrect about a person. The misconceptions that are talked about these days often are from movies and tv shows that are watched everyday by millennials. They create a false image of particular people or things which get believed by young adults and kids. Stereotypes also have an effect on the generations of today because they are general characteristics that people believe represent a particular person or group.
Not having experienced such a cultural misunderstanding myself, all I can relate to is the way my cultures incorrectly stereotype other cultures. In my case, since I don 't only belong to one culture, I have a broad understanding of how it feels to be stereotyped. As an American, I?ve seen how some of us sometimes make stereotypes of people from the middle East. As a Mexican, I?ve often seen the common stereotype that all Mexicans eat tacos everyday and illegally cross the US border. Another example is a common assumption, especially amongst Hispanics, that at the sight of a person with Asian features, must be from China, that?d make me a perpetrator in this case.
