Companies and organizations use advertisements and graphics to present a message that will ultimately persuade their audience to do something. Advertisements are seen everywhere from billboards along the highway, to television commercials viewed by millions. A very serious issue in today's world, is smoking and the effect it has on the environment and its inhabitants. Anti-smoking advertisements are very effective with getting their point across and doing it in a way that sends the populous a wakeup call. This graphic is initially seen as very simplistic and boring, but as the viewer continues to analyze the picture, a deeper meaning is pulled from beneath the surface level meanings. This image is very effective because of the severity of the issue, the tone presented, and the overall message it sends to the targeted audience. Many foundations including, Truth Initiative, fund the anti-smoking commercials and advertisements. They are trying to convey the message that smoking can potentially kill and the people should do something about it as a society to stop this epidemic. The foundation gets straight to the point when presenting this message, they send a very raw message to their audience because they do not see this as a slight issue, but something needing to be fixed immediately. They heavily rely on the appeal to emotion in this advertisement, and this strategy proves to be very effective. It helps get their point across in a way that will make a difference and send a wake up call to all smokers. The sentence in the lower right hand corner is a call to action and pulls at the audience's heart strings and makes them come to their senses about smoking and how it will end up killing them if they allow it to take over their
