Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Without these tools of the english language, dialogue and literature would be all the more dull and unappealing. However, with these useful instruments, writers and speakers can better communicate through some of the many rhetorical devices.

One example of a source that claims to be trustworthy but is questionable at best is the website AskPetersen.com. Karen Thompson Walker created the speech to explore the effects of how fear can impact a person and their perception of fear. She explains how fear is just there, but a figment of the mind. As a young child I learned how information can be corrupted and distorted through a classroom game I use to play called telephone. In the game you would start with a message and try to make it around the room with the same message, and even though this game sounds easy the classroom never made it through with the same message. To me this game represents society and the media on how not everything you see is what it seems. I think that information can easily be corrupted and that it happens in our everyday life. There are several reasons for information to be corrupted for example: to gain power, make someone else look as if they are a lesser being, or to control others with a single message.

In today’s lecture, Dr. Laude discussed optimization. Optimization means “wanting to be better” in our career and in our life. First of all, one reason that people lie to themselves about why they are doing bad in a class is to make themselves feel better, some learn from their mistakes but some unfortunately do not. Dr. Laude explained that achieving personal growth and success is about understanding that for every “optimization there’s always a response,” a positive or negative one. Furthermore, Dr. Laude recalled that it took him approximately two and a half years to learn how to study, which was by cramming before a test and memorizing everything he read in the textbooks.
Rhetorical Analysis of a TED Talk: Emma Marris: Nature Is Everywhere, We Just Need to Learn to See It Emma Marris address the idea about how people view nature and what they consider to be nature. Emma Marris is an environmental science writer whom earned her master’s degree in science writing at John Hopkins University .
