A Secret Dope (A story about life saving Witchcraft.) In the text, “No Witchcraft For Sale”, there is a white family that has an African cook. That cooks name is, Gideon. Gideon is very sweet and loves his “family” more than anything in the world. Something goes wrong in the story and there is a hero in the end that saves the little boy’s life in the family. Nobody really understands the actions put to the test in this story, nobody will understand why Gideon chose the choices that he did either. Throughout the story those answers are answered and it may create problems. Gideon is a cook for the white family. During this time, racism was a big deal anyway, many white folks and families have slaves, maids, cooks, etc. Teddy is the son of the white family and sees no difference in Gideon and his family. Teddy and Gideon have a really great relationship within the family. When Teddy gets the poison in his eyes from the snake, Gideon knows he has to save his family member. Gideon admits that he loves the little boy. “Then he smiled at the little boy and said: “Little Yellow Head.” That became the native name for the child”(No Witchcraft for Sale). Gideon and Teddy look at each other as brothers and Gideon really cares for the little boy. Saving the little boy's life was something that Teddy will never forget and he will always be thankful for Gideon. Nobody does not understand why he wouldn't give it out, it could save so many other people’s lives and he could possibly make money off of it. “He said all these things one after, and seemed not to care they were contradictory. He was rude and stubborn”(No Witchcraft for Sale). Gideon does not want to give out his tradition because it will just be a money maker for everyone involved but him. He knows that he will not get anything out of it because he is a cook, he is the lowest of the low. It is also Gideon’s tradition, it is something that is within his people and something that only his people know. It would be awesome for there to be a way to help everyone that gets hit in the eye with a snake, Gideon just does not feel safe giving it
