In order to truly influence today’s students, we must upgrade instruction. As teachers it is essential to integrate 21st century learning skills in the classrooms. Vivian Stewart ‘s article, A World Class Education: Learning From International Models of Excellence, explain how today’s students live differently from students long ago (2012, p. 1) Its more than using computers and IPads, it’s about changing instruction to include multiple intelligences, differentiated instruction, and cooperative learning. We teach a different type of student. The students we teach are born into technology. They have IPad as soon as they are able to hold objects. Although technology is a part of their everyday life, we must also incorporate traditional teaching into lessons to help students learn concepts that need to be concrete. Traditional learning consists of student not moving sitting down at the desk and recalling information and memorization. For example students need to know how to use pencil and paper to solve math problems. Students need to know how to write effectively and/or persuasively. These are skills that can be taught in a traditional way because students will be required to perform these tasks using pencil and paper. Both are the same when it comes to differentiated instruction. Students learn in many different ways, some students need traditional instruction to understand concepts. They need a teacher to reteach a lesson and focus on weakness. Technology also doesn’t know the child. We can’t put circumstances in the computer and create lessons to help children. Lessons in diversity, acceptance, and social skills must be taught traditionally. In fact cooperative learning is not effective unless these lessons are taught to build a foundation for working
