St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is considered a global leader with a high standard Code of Conduct. They apply the code daily to every decision that must be made. In this case study the primary nurse, Amelia Wilkerson, is caring for a patient, Katy Palmer who has recently been admitted to the hospital for fatigue and abnormal lab counts. The patient asks Amelia for information regarding her diagnosis. Amelia has seen Katy’s results and knows that she has been diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. The ethical dilemma seen in this situation is that it is outside of the scope of practice for Amelia to discuss Katy’s original diagnosis with her.

In the first scenario presented on page 121 of the text (Mackenzie & Mackenzie, 2010), a principal has accepted an award for gains in math scores within the school from the chair of the board. In his acceptance, he never mentions his faculty. Since he did not seem to support the math department’s suggestions for improvement, a teacher is upset and wants to schedule a meeting with the board chairman to let him/her know that the principal lacks ethics. I do not agree with this approach because speaking against another educator is considered disparaging, and the principal should be given an opportunity to explain the acceptance first.
When reading the IAMFC Code of Ethics and AAMFT Code of Ethics I found that they compare significantly, much more than they contrast. Many of the principals coincide. For example, the topic of multiple relationships is one of the many principles that parallel in many codes of ethics. The IAMFC Code of Ethics encourages family counselors to “avoid whenever possible multiple relationships, such as business, social, or sexual contacts with any current clients or family members” (Section A). Similarly, the AAMFT Code of Ethics also requires that therapists “make every effort to avoid conditions and multiple relationships with clients that could impair professional judgment or increase the risk of exploitation.
The North Carolina State Board of Education outlines the professional standards to which teaches should uphold within, and even outside of, the classroom. These standards are comprised of the commitment to the student, commitment to the school, and commitment to the profession. Also, the Code of Ethics includes the professional conduct which entails, honesty, the acknowledgement of the rights of others, keeping information confidential, and compliance of criminal laws (NC State Board of Education, 1998). The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) developed a code of values which is intended to serve as a model or guide to professional behavior for social workers. Ethics Case Analysis #2: Relationship Dilemma Several months after beginning a counseling relationship with Jane, my client showed up at a family dinner with my brother-in-law. If we as nurses respect the confidentiality of a patient, we should do so for all the patients. However, Griffith (2007) argues that the duty of confidence should not be absolute and nurses should always consider sharing information if required. Though the principle of respecting patient autonomy and their right to confidentiality is broken here, the principle of beneficence and non-maleficence is uphold. Nurses have an obligation to protect patient’s confidentiality but the duty to warn an innocent party of imminent harm is far more critical.
