How has your involvement in the AVID program contributed to your success and/or growth at Fremont High School?
Being an AVID tutor at Fremont High school has been enriched my life in multiple ways and I will carry the connections I gained being an AVID tutor beyond my high school career. During tutorial, AVID helped me improve my teaching skills by forcing me to critically think and problem solve. Tutorial time pushed me to try to try to teach and make sure those I was helping understood the problems and why and how they solve them a certain way instead of just showing them how to solve the problem. Post-college, I hope to enter a program to receive a specialist degree or doctorate in school psychology. I want to become a school psychologist for elementary students to make a positive impact on students' lives by helping children learn better by supporting their mental health, learning, and behavior. Becoming a school psychologist will allow me to provide support, intervention, and advocate for students. I want to help students overcome challenges, achieve their academic and personal goals, and so they can thrive in school and beyond. School psychologists help create a positive school enviroment that fosters inclusive and supportive learning environments. Throughout my life, I have had to overcome many obstacles because of my struggles with anxiety and depression. I really wish there were more resources in place to help students. I specifically want to work with elementary students because often times their struggles are minimized because of their young age. Because of my experiences with mental illness, I will be able to help support students, parents, and teachers navigate often unfamilar and scary waters. It can be really difficult to advocate for yourself when one is struggling with mental illness or neurodivergencies, and I can use the skills I have gained and will learn in college to help advocate and do the best by the students I will assist. The school based therapists and school psychologists at Fremont High have really helped me and assisted me is tough times and I would like to provide the same support for future students. Overall, becoming a school psychologist would allow me many opportunities to have positive effects on student’s lives by helping them overcome the effects of trauma, cope with mental illnesses, face a mental health crisis, or achieve personal goals that they might
