While interviewing school counselor, Melissa Gomes from Friendship Southeast Elementary Public Charter School, I was able to obtain a lot of information pertaining to a school counselor’s profession. Although, I have acquired plenty of information about a school counselor occupation throughout the last year and half of attending Trinity, the interview was very beneficial and knowledgeable. I would love to become an assistant teacher because I like to coach and mentor kids. Being able to teach and share my passion for math with kids is something I would thoroughly enjoy and is a big reason why I want to become an assistant teacher. I can vividly remember the advice given to me by my high school counselor. I was broken down, whispering to myself that I was not college bound. It was my counselor who made me realize that persistence was a key factor to continuing my education. Growing up, children are always asked what they want to be when they grow up. For most kids, the most common answers include a doctor,a vet, a firefighter and the most funniest, a superhero. For me I started off wanting to be a Pediatrician, but later on as I got older, I loved the idea of hearing people's troubles and problems. I participated in many clubs in school for peer mediation, problem solver, As well as I was in counseling, due to a bullying issue in elementary and middle school. When I complete all of my schoolings I would like to become a behavioral disorder counselor. This career is for me because I love helping people, I want to help people better understand themselves so they can overcome their problems, and the human brain and the thought process has always been a huge interest to me. When I decided to train to become a professional school counselor, I knew I had a long road ahead. I am trained to be a teacher, a special education teacher to be specific, and though I will be able to use much of my past experience as a classroom teacher in my school counseling practice, I am aware that I will also need to see my students in a new way, a more holistic way.
