On April 7, 2016 at 8am I entered into Booker T. Washington High School. It was a busy morning with high school students headed to the cafeteria for breakfast or the gym to hangout amongst each other until school started. After checking in with the receptionist, I headed to the office of Mrs. Jennifer Dickson, M.A. As I entered her office I could tell she was busy at work with all the things she needed to get done as she prepared for testing week at the school. Upon seeing me she stopped what she was doing at the moment to greet me and began our interview.
Mrs. Dickson is the 7th and 8th grade School Counselor for Booker T. Washington High School. She has been a school counselor for 15 years. Before becoming a school counselor, she was a social worker who had grown tired of the social work field, but wanted to remain connected to the field somehow. Mrs. Dickson made the decision to return to college to obtain her MA in counseling, which is the minimum requirement for her school. She works alongside two other high school counselors, and she shares an office suite with an assistant principal. Mrs. Dickson believes the counselor-student ratio for her school is 250:1. Dickson performs individual and group counseling, classroom guidance lessons, and high school guidance for 8th graders. In individual and group counseling Mrs. Dickson covers topics such as career planning, behavioral issues, and social etiquette with the students. She also has the opportunity to be the School Building Level Committee Chair and a 504 Designee. Mrs. Dickson once had the opportunity to lead a toy drive with the Student Government Association for the 7th and 8th graders. She really enjoys interacting with the students and considers it to be her favorite part.
