In this paper, the background of the school counseling program will be explained. In addition, the internship student’s career goals and the relationship with this organization will be discussed. Also, one or more substance content areas in family life education will be presented. Lastly, the areas of competence the intern student would like to improve during the internship experience will be discussed. According to the Nevada Department of Education, the counseling department is aligned with the Washoe County School District counseling objectives. It explains that the goal of the counseling model is to incorporate and implement strategies to assist students, parents, staff, administrators, and community stakeholders in the advancement of the learning process, and to remove barriers which impede access to education. The Nevada Department of Education states that the State of Nevada requires that all public schools have at least one counselor with a prescribed caseload ratio of 1:425. The students who decided to do the internship with the elementary school counseling department would work closely with parents and children. Having the exposure to practice with a counselor at the elementary level will give the intern student the opportunity to increase his knowledge on the duties and responsibilities that a school’s counselors have at the elementary level, as well as provide the student with a more clear idea about his career
